Tips for Getting to Know Your Online Audience

Getting to know your online audience is one of the most important things you can do for your business. This is just as important as getting to know your in-person clientele, which I can get into on another blog post. I believe human connection is one of the ways I was able to grow my business to be so successful, so I can't stress this enough. One of my goals during my beginner years (and is still one of my goals today) was always to be connected to my customers and always know what they were looking for and wanting.

I want to share with you what's helped me along the way because I know how difficult it can be to grow an online platform and in-person clientele at the same time. I also know that so many of you, myself included, struggle with making this connection happen every single day on social media while also showing up for your clients that come to get services.

Let's get into it...

Work backwards
Whenever I’m trying to figure out who I am talking to and what I want to share, I always start with the end goal and work my way back. I’ll give you an example. If the end goal is to book a lash client, I think of all the ways that I can attract that lash client to want to book an appointment with me. I write these things down in a notebook so I can revert back to it later on. From there, I decide that I want to either show myself with lashes on, explain how lashes can be beneficial, or show other clients that have beautiful sets of lashes. Also, I like to ask my audience questions about the kind of lashes they like because truthfully it’s not about me and what I want, it’s about what they want and what they are looking for. Which brings me to my next point: it’s not about you, it’s about them and the quicker you learn that the better off you will be in fine-tuning your online audience and knowing exactly what they want to see.

Think of it this way: creating content for your specific online audience is like dating. You really want to get to know the person and who they are so you can impress them and show them all of the good… that’s how you hook em.

Ask yourself: how can you show them how amazing you are through content?
The answer is by creating specific content that caters to the type of person you want to attract, and this goes back to knowing who you’re speaking to. How old is your ideal client or audience? What do they wear? What do they drink? What are their hobbies? What things do they enjoy beyond lashes and skincare? Showing up for those interests will create connections with your online audience that goes beyond just booking the services with them because we are in this for the long-haul, right? We can’t just expect our clients to put out without us showing them what we’re made of and that takes time, storytelling, enticement and engagement before any kind of service booking goes down.

It really helps to first figure out what you want your online audience to be and what you can create for them. It’s always remembering to go back to the list I mentioned above and making sure that you are consistent in your storytelling, that you are consistent in your posting and your captions, and that you were consistent in sharing what you offer as a business but also as a person. You have to remember that things take time! It takes time for people to trust and it takes time for people to book services so you can’t get hung up on a failed Instagram post or lack of sales in one day. It’s about continuing on and building your brand by showing up no matter what

Now, with all of this said, don't only focus on the online audience when your in-person audience is right there booking services with you. What I would do is get to know your in-person clientele more and start creating content to reach those clients and clients just like them online.

Ask and you shall receive
One of the most simple tips I have is to straight up ask your clients what they like about you, what they enjoy hearing from you, what you could share more of and then turning that into content for social media. I see and talk to so many women struggling to come up with ideas when their clients are already telling them what they want to see and hear more of.

Social networking
This means being active with your direct messages, commenting on other people's posts, finding people in your industry or potential clients and communicating with them as well. This is what I like to compare to in-person handshakes. Get to know people online, so one day, you can know them in person!

Photo shoots!

Think about what catches your eye while you’re scrolling social media or a website. It’s usually stunning photos mixed with personality to create unique branding that represents what the person is selling. Professional photo shoots can instantly elevate your business and will get you in the mood for creativity! I always feel so hyped on work before during and after a shoot!

Be yourself

It is so hard looking around and trying to be something you aren’t. Always remember your in person audience (your clients) who enjoy and love you. Bring those attributes that got you the clients to the social media world and use it as an extension of your virtual business. Think about the things clients constantly struggle with and help to serve them through content that feels good for you and works for them.

Lastly, enjoy the process and understand that online is the way of the world but it doesn’t have to be an energy sucker and can be one of the best tools for your business.
